So you want the strength, balance and tight little bum of a yogi, but you’re broke. I get it. I have been on a student budget for a few years now and on top of that, I’m a bit of a frugal (or as I like to call it resourceful) gal. Over the years my priorities have drastically shifted from cigarettes and dye jobs to organic produce & tuition. Investing in yourself is one of the best things you can do, but sometimes forking out the cash for a fancy yoga membership just isn’t in the cards.
You may be surprised to know that even though I’m tight for cash and recently quit the only job I had that was paying my bills, I’ve managed to maintain a membership at one of the most beautiful yoga studios in Toronto, Yogathletix. This studios beauty isn’t only in the eye of the holder of the membership card, it was also voted one of the Top New Yoga Studios In Toronto by BlogTO 2013! I love this studio for so many reasons. The instructors, the atmosphere and the variety of classes they offer. The classes appeal to whatever I’m in the mood for whether it’s getting sweaty at a GetnFit or Barre class or kicking tension to the curb at GetnZen or Yogasana, this studio has it all.
So how can you get your yoga on without sacrificing your first born child? Well, there are a few options. The first one is to hit up Yogathletix and take advantage of their killer deals. Right now they are offering 30 days unlimited yoga for $40 Bucks! They also offer discounted memberships for couples, so find a friend, save some cash and get your booty moving. But if free is the name of your game, I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve…
Here’s my top 3 ways to be a free yogi!
1. Energy Exchange
This is how I scored my golden ticket to unlimited yoga for FREE! I received the monthly newsletter from my beloved yoga studio stating that they were looking for someone to come in for a couple hours a week to clean the studio in exchange for unlimited yoga. I have never been so excited to be a janitor in my entire life! So if wiping down mirrors, mopping a floor or receptionist duties sounds like your kind of gig, I highly recommend contacting your favourite studio about doing an energy exchange. I love this agreement because it keeps me motivated to go to class even when I’d rather kick back on the couch because who wants to pull janitorial duties for nothing!
2. The good Ol’ interweb.
Keep your pennies in your pocket by heading over to FREE online yoga sites like www.doyogawithme.com or www.myfreeyoga.com. These sites offer up a great selection of free yoga videos for you to do in the comfort of your own home allowing you to fit in some downward doggy-ness at any time of the day! *As great as this is, I must say that nothing beats the energy and hands-on approach of a good instructor.
3. Skills Swap
Whether you are a ninja or a knitter, you’ve got skills that should be shared with the world. We’ve all got a few things that we’re really good at, so why not swap out your skills with one of your yogi friends in return for some lessons? It’s a great way to spend quality time with your pals plus it’s a no cash investment in your health. Hit up one of your yogi friends for some lessons in the proper way to backbend, twist, stretch and connect with your breath. All it’s going to cost you is a handmade pair of mittens, painting or in my case a nutritional consultation or a home-cooked meal.
I hope my frugal tips can kickstart your yogi status and get you that tight lil tush!
